Merced City School District (MCSD) has began studying the potential of incorporating a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. The study is based on community feedback collected at MCSD Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) Community Forums and input from the MCSD District English Learner Advisory Council (DELAC) in the Spring of 2024.
In the Fall of 2024, a DLI Planning Team was developed that included MCSD teachers and administrators. Conversations with DELAC committee members, certificated and classified bargaining teams, and community members continue to take place. The DLI Planning Team visited Atwater and Los Banos' DLI programs. The Planning Team, this time joined by representatives of our bargaining partners and an MCSD DELAC representative, also visited Fresno Unified's DLI program at Leavenworth Elementary. The purpose of the visits to other DLI programs was to observe the program in practice and to speak with staff so that MCSD could learn the key elements to a successful program. In October 2024, MCSD is conducting DLI Listening Sessions to hear from our community.
MCSD has contracted with a well-regarded DLI consultant from the Association of Two-Way & Dual Immersion Education (ATDLE) to guide the district in the subsequent steps to successfully launch the program as soon as responsible. MCSD will work with ATDLE and our existing DLI Planning team to create a DLI Task Force. The MCSD DLI Task Force will expand its membership and create sub-committees to develop and come to a consensus on key elements including, but not limited to curriculum, instruction, staffing considerations, program structure, enrollment processes, and other supports.
Below, you will find a list of questions that have been generated through the MCSD Planning Team and collected through the MCSD DLI Listening Sessions - this is called the DLI Frequently Asked Questions - or DLI FAQ. It will be updated regularly as we continue this process.
