Congratulations to all of the MCSD students who took home awards from the Merced County STEM Fair!  The event was held on March 6 at UC Merced and featured nearly 30 projects from more than 110 students in grades 5 through 8.

In addition to several grade level winners, MCSD students had two of the top three projects that will be moving on to the California Science & Engineering Fair on April 29-30 in Los Angeles.  Sixth grader Brady Hickman from Chenoweth Elementary won for his project "What Brand is a Hit?" and seventh grader Essey Aferwerki from Hoover Middle School won for his project entitled "Effect of Climate Change on Soil."

The exhibits were judged by local experts, including scientists and professors from UC Merced and Merced College.  Participants also had a chance to tour various labs and other areas of the campus.  This event was made possible by sponsorship from the Merced County Education Foundation and Pacific Gas & Electric and was hosted as part of UC Merced Research Week.

Students Shine During Spotlight Showcase

Students from throughout the Merced City School District graced the stage at the historic Merced Theatre on February 12 for the district's 4th annual Spotlight Showcase.  The event is a chance to celebrate arts education and the emerging talents of our students.  It featured a wide variety of performances, from singing and dancing to acting and bands.  The video above features short highlights from each group, and a full length video will be posted soon.  Thank you to all of the staff and family members who made this evening possible!

MCSD Hosts District Science Fair

MCSD hosted its annual District Science Fair on Friday, January 25 at the STEAM Center.  More than 100 students in 5th-8th grades who won their school fairs had a chance to present their projects to judges from UC Merced and local industry.  Winners were selected for each grade level, and 20 projects were chosen to move on the Merced County Office of Education STEM Fair, which will be held on March 6 at UC Merced.  Congratulations to all of the participants, and thank you to the staff, family members, and local experts who supported them along the way!
