The Merced City School District Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution during the March 13 meeting regarding the district’s commitment to school safety. This resolution also supports ongoing safety advocacy efforts by the California School Boards Association. Please click here to see the resolution in its entirety.
The Merced City School District is excited to begin enrolling students in kindergarten and transitional kindergarten on March 12. Preschool enrollment also remains open throughout the year. Please see the information below to learn more about when and where to register as well as what documents you'll need to provide.
KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten Registration Begins: March 12th

Register at your neighborhood school between 9:30 and 3:30.

Students will be registered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Some classes may reach capacity sooner than others.

Kindergarten students must be 5 years of age on or before September 1, 2018.

TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN
Transitional Kindergarten Registration Begins: March 12th

If your child turns 5 between September 2 – December 2, 2018, fill out the paperwork required for kindergarten. Your student will be placed in a Transitional Kindergarten classroom. Transitional Kindergarten is a two year program. Year 1 is Transitional Kindergarten - Year 2 is Kindergarten.

The Merced City School District unveiled its new solar project at a ribbon cutting ceremony on February 16 at Gracey Elementary School. TerraVerde Energy, an independent energy advisor that helps schools, public agencies and private companies reduce energy costs, planned, designed and ran a competitive procurement process resulting in the school district’s selection of NextEra Energy Resources and PCI Solar to build, own, and operate the solar facilities at several thoughtfully selected sites throughout the district. The arrays are located at Hoover Middle School, Ada Givens Elementary and the adjacent STEAM Center, Burbank Elementary, Chenoweth Elementary, Gracey Elementary, Muir Elementary, Peterson Elementary, Sheehy Elementary, Wright Elementary, and the MCSD Maintenance/Operations/Transportation facility. The new system was installed through the District entering into a Power Purchase Agreement with NextEra Energy Resources, as well as leveraging funding from the California Clean Energy Jobs Act (Prop. 39), and is projected to save the school district more than $7.9 million in electricity costs over the next 25 years.
MCSD Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services Teresa Saldivar-Morse said, “We chose to engage TerraVerde for analysis and development of our solar project because they were able to look into the feasibility of doing complex projects at no upfront cost to us. There was no financial risk to the district, and they have refined a process specifically to meet the needs of public schools.”

The District engaged TerraVerde’s energy advisory services to ensure that it received competitive pricing on high-quality, integrated energy systems designed to address its goals. TerraVerde helped explore all options for energy cost reduction, minimize financial risk, and conserve staff resources. The project was constructed by PCI Solar, and MCSD serves as the solar host. By using a solar Power Purchase Agreement to acquire clean, affordable solar-generated power, the District is able to significantly reduce its overall electricity bill compared to current utility costs. The result is a solar installation that provides a hedge against future price increases and changes that are likely to come with the current utility rate reforms. Many of the solar arrays also provide shade around playground areas or additional lighting for parking lots. The solar array at the STEAM Center includes a weather station, which students will be able to monitor as a real-world part of their curriculum.

The bright lights of the historic Merced Theatre shined on students from throughout the Merced City School District during our recent ‘Spotlight’ variety show. This annual event gives groups from all of our 14 elementary and four middle schools a chance to perform for their parents and peers in a venue that makes them feel like superstars! It’s also an opportunity to showcase the wide range of arts education offered in our schools, which is a priority for our district leaders. They value the way arts programs promote creativity, confidence, and the ability to express oneself as part of a well-rounded curriculum. It’s why we focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) rather than STEM.
We loved seeing our students’ excitement as they took center stage. Sheehy Elementary kicked off Act One with a musical tribute to our nation’s military branches. Then Tenaya Middle School’s performing arts club took the audience back in time with a radio-show inspired number called “Dancing through the Decades.” Up next were second graders from Stowell Elementary who performed a traditional Hmong dance. They were followed by the Wright Wildcat Band, which played a trio of songs before members of the Hoover Winter Guard wowed the crowd with their flag and dance skills. The Reyes Honor Choir then sang and signed a song called Spider’s Web, followed by the Muir Elementary Lao Dancers who told a folktale through their movements. Band students from Stefani and Rivera Elementary schools then showed their skills with a song that dates back to the 1500’s. The finale for the first half of the show was the Rivera Middle ‘School of Rock band,’ which brought down the house with Journey’s classic hit, “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
Act Two also featured a variety of talent, beginning with our elementary band made up of students from Burbank, Gracey, Fremont, Muir, and Peterson. They were followed by a high energy hip hop dance group from Givens Elementary and then the Stefani Stallions String Ensemble. The next group featured students from Franklin Elementary who programmed robots to dance to an electronic song while they played along on bucket drums. Then Burbank Elementary students took the stage to perform a scene from “Hercules the 4th Grade Hero,” which they learned as part of a collaborative program with Playhouse Merced. After that, the Fremont Honor Choir sang “Lights, Camera, Action” from its Hollywood inspired winter musical, and Chenoweth Elementary students performed a patriotic number called “All-American Me and You.” Peterson Elementary was up next with a scene from Playhouse Merced’s “Alice in Neverland.” The Cruickshank Tiger Jazz Band wrapped up the evening with a smooth and skillful rendition of “Uncle Milo’s Slide Show.”
It was a wonderful night thanks to our outstanding students and their supportive families as well as dedicated staff from MCSD and the Merced Theatre. We would like to express our sincere appreciation for everyone who made this event possible and for the teachers who provide engaging and enriching arts education for our students all year long.
