The Merced City School District is launching a new reading initiative called “Aim High, Target Success” to shine a light on the importance of literacy. It will also offer simple steps parents can take at home to help children improve their reading skills. The goal is to ensure that students are reading at or above grade level, with the target of reading proficiently by the end of third grade because that is a critical benchmark for future success.
As part of this campaign, we are holding a “Fill the Bus” book drive in hopes of providing a new or gently used book for each of our students to take home. Our school bus will be parked at Main and M Streets during the Cap & Town celebration in downtown Merced on September 10th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. (The Cap & Town festival itself runs from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.)
Books can also be dropped off in collection boxes at the following locations through September 9th:
-
MCSD District Office, 444 W. 23rd St., Suite B
-
Merced Civic Center (first floor lobby), 678 W. 18th St.
-
Paul’s Place, 2991 G St.
We would like to thank Merced Sunrise Rotary, Paul’s Place, the City of Merced, and students from the Merced Union High School District for their support with this book drive.
